DESCRIPTION

The competition is about the environmental rehabilitation and transformation of the deteriorated lignite mines in the area of Aminteo in Western Macedonia, Greece (2.200ha).
Main aim of Topio7’s project is to facilitate the rebirth of a productive and fertile landscape, maintaining the genius loci of the site and the memory of the past use. Using ecology as a spatial regulator of the restoration process, a new landscape entity is being produced, connected with the surrounding areas and supported by renewable sources of energy. The site will recuperate its agricultural identity, but it will also offer uses of tourism and recreation that will become poles of attraction. The project acts as a strategy in four thematic axes: ecology, agricultural production, landscape restoration and culture.
The core idea is the creation of a spatial organization system that will define clearly the blurred borders of the area and will form a series of successive zones of agriculture, forest plantations, uses and movements. This proposed network gives geometry to the vast and out of scale site, facilitating the interconnection and habitats’ ecological recuperation. The final result is being supported by landscape metabolism processes, configurating a series of different characters’ and spatial qualities’ landscapes.
Through these planning gestures, the project reconnects, interconnects and incorporates the existing degraded parts into a new landscape continuum. The new landscape canvas is experiencing a constant and dynamic ecological change through time, offering simultaneously a rich program of uses and possibilities for the local society.

DESCRIPTION

The subject of the Competition was to express ideas for the pavement network of the city of Katerini social and commercial center.
The project “landscape_stitches” aims to create a contemporary public space that is spatially integrated, has a bioclimatic-ecological character, a social dimension and a variety of uses and actions, contributing to the formation of local identity for the city. The idea comes from the linearity of the pedestrian area and its use as an active urban passage of the city. By reinterpreting the dynamics of the axes the project proposes a fluid field of crossings, where urban and landscape bioclimatic features coexist as a new hybrid urban habitat.
The paving is treated as a single unitarian skin with elements of the Pierian landscape. It forms a unified urban carpet that is flowing throughout the whole pavement network. The new pattern is organized by landscape weaves that flow into space and are organized in orthogonal longitudinal shapes, the so-called “landscape stitches”. These are longitudinal small gardens that function as small urban parks with endemic species, green rooms that create rest areas with water elements and playgrounds. The Pierian Mountains and their landscape as a dominant landscape reference are the source of inspiration for these small landscapes.
Additional elements of the bioclimatic upgrading are the green facades with creepers applied to selected surrounding buildings, as well as the organization of a canopy system for the recreational areas.

DESCRIPTION

 The Schematic Design studies of the project “Eco_corridors” is the evolution process of the 1st prize won by topio7 architects-landscape architects firm at the competition of: “Regeneration and Reuse of former lignite mines in the Western Macedonia region” that was launched by the Public Power Corporation of Greece in 2015. These Schematic Design studies are required for the complete provision of services in order for the project to proceed to the next stage of the Final-Detailed design.

The Schematic Design studies focus on the evolution of strategies for the re-design of a 188ha area of a former abandoned lignite mine.  The subject of Schematic Design includes the following studies:

1. Architecture and Landscape Architecture Design
2. Hydraulic and Hydrological Study
3. Study of electronic infrastructure and structures,

and it is accompanied by a Forestry Consultant, Biologist – Landscape Biologist and Road Transport Engineer.

The “Eco_corridors” project idea rethinks this post-industrial landscape as a new uses area in order to become a public pole through its environmental, economic, and social transformation. It is a cultural landscape of memory thus the proposal aims also to maintain its unique genius loci. The concept derives from the longitudinal site’s shape which could function as an ecological corridor. The need for environmental enrichment and biodiversity has led to a system of fluxes that organizes spatial relationships and connects habitats. The resulting landscape is being crossed by a series of ecological itineraries – the ‘eco_corridors’ with different characters, qualities, and cultural uses, sports – and leisure facilities that offer economic benefits. The project’s main aim is to maintain the special atmosphere of the place, by unifying and integrating through scales. The project acts as a strategy that is being expressed in three thematic axes: (i) biodiversity-ecological connectivity (ii) water net management (iii) evolution through time (iv) spatial organization of movements and rest areas, v) new uses on local and supra local character (cultural uses, sports facilities, cultivations, and leisure). The project’s development is of a wider environmental, economic, aesthetic, and social importance, aiming for the Just transition of the region and 21st-century societies to the post-lignite era.
