DESCRIPTION

The aim of the proposal is to create a unified urban ensemble, where building, landscape and archaeological site function together as a whole, integrated into the life of the city and the port. A thru-axis or promenade called the “Cultural Axis” in the East-West direction connects the residential area to the West with the Cultural Coastline by way of the preservation zone. From this basic axis extends a secondary axis or “Viewing Promenade” in the North-South direction, as an extension of Kolokotroni Street, connecting the residential area to the north with the Cultural Coastline to the South. A park, an archaeological courtyard and an urban square develop along its length. At the intersection of these two paths arises the main entrance to the New Thematic Archaiological Museum. The building’s exterior is divided into two horizontal zones, which coincide with two separate phases of construction. The lower portion preserves the current industrial character and houses the exhibition areas. On top of this oversized plinth sits a light, three-storey peristyle of exposed concrete. The emphasis on the horizontal zone of the pilotis and the upright, three-storey columns allow this portion of the building to preserve its presence from afar and to act as a landmark.

The raised pilotis and the central atrium are the two characteristics of the building that are utilized in its redesign as a museum. As a point of reference, the atrium signals the raised plinth of the entrance hall within the large shed housing the former repair shop; it organizes the spaces of the museum all around its perimeter; and it unifies all building levels vertically. Around the atrium are positioned the storage spaces for findings, visually accessible from all levels of the building. At the same time, the raised pilotis is given prominence as an attractive public space, open and accessible to all, even when the Museum is closed. For this reason, the removal of the first floor plate immediately above the pilotis level is suggested in order to increase the usable height and augment visual access to the archaeological site and the port. Regarding the exhibition spaces, the primary goal is to bring visitors or passersby into direct contact with the exhibits, and to incorporate the archaeological site of the Hetioneian Gate into the Museum narrative.

The main compositional gestures in the structuring of the landscape design are formed by the two primary urban axes – new promenades – and by the three-part articulation of space (Park, Square and Museum Court). The proposal aims at the creation of a bioclimatic whole that is characterized by fluidity and coherence, utilizes the site’s dynamics as a powerful viewing point, gives emphasis to vegetation and is consistent with the spirit (genius loci) of the archaeological site. In planting design, the concept underlines the vocabulary of the existing archaeological site such as, the arid brushwood landscape and the open fields of natural regeneration. The aim is the formation of an arid Mediterranean landscape that assures the biodiversity and is perceptually unified with the remaining green spaces in the area.

YEAR: 2014
AUTHOR: Thanasis Polyzoidis

DESCRIPTION

The site of 1,7m2 includes three vacation houses on two different levels, retained by stone walls. The project aims to create different levels of privacy between the three housing complexes by means of new plantations and navigating paths. The geometry of the hardscapes highlights the sense of wandering between the new maquis plantations that function as vertical barriers. New garigue aromatic plants are the dominant plantation choices between the houses, creating an ecological arid landscape in synergy with the indigenous surrounding landscape.

DESCRIPTION

The entrance of Amades village forms an attraction pole because of the existing planes trees, the stream and the existing tavern. The study area is located by the stream beside the existing small square of the tavern. It is characterized by the inclined topography that offers significant viewpoints to the sea. The project refers to a broader area out of the borders of the study area in order to achieve a more holistic and unified landscape enhancement and to provide space for parking.

The project aims to integrate small scale interventions and uses in the landscape in order to create a new attraction pole for the village and the surrounding areas. The concept derives from the site’s genius loci – characteristics as water, dense vegetation, shadows and light, viewpoints and inclined topography constitute the main compositional tools.

Water as a significant spatial element is reinforced by appropriate reformations (water sculpture walls) and hydraulic works in order to restore the continuous water flow (water soundscapes). The existing inclined topography and the clearings among the dense vegetation are highlighted by creating large terraces. They accommodate viewpoints and new uses and as gradual “large steps” the visitor are directed towards to stream. Space has a tripartite articulation where three functional zones are identified and emerged. The entance zone, related to the street traffic and the tavern, that is redeveloped and functions as small square and parking area, the terraces that accommodate mild activities (playground, rest areas, viewpoints, small amphitheater, outdoor event place, picnic area) and where kiosks of light construction – that appears as scattered nests in the landscape – accommodates points for trade and information. Finally, there is the stream zone that provides free pathways to the village and to various monuments.

In the project a contemporary material such as cor-ten is introduced in order to act as a significant unifying element that tissue the individual spatial zones and gives cohesion and identity to the intervention. It runs throughout all space as a kind of a unifying ribbon. It takes the form of retaining wall, of facade elements or even the form of sculptural walls.

The existing trees are enriched by new species that contribute to the local biodiversity and their location does not form a view obstacle. Low plantation design emphasizes the native dry species that are located either as vegetal barriers or as discreet low height separation elements of space, as well as the enrichment of the stream ecosystem.

DESCRIPTION

The brief of “Volos x4” Architectural Design Competition called for the selection of four blocks in any neighborhood with the degraded urban environment and the creation of a large new urban plot to be produced by merging them. The intersection of streets inside the new ‘quadruple’ block in combination with urban voids and interior courtyards will serve as a new public space for use by all the inhabitants of the block.

The project aims to regenerate the cross-shaped street junction formed by Sofokleous and Metamorfoseos streets. The new public space is produced by merging the streets with urban voids and interior courtyards. It will serve as a unified reproductive entity able to contribute to the expansion of the urban green into the urban fabric. The project is called «fertile» – as it relies on the idea of fertility, the reproduction process as well as the osmosis of natural and urban landscape.

The urban nurseries constitute the main spatial tool of the expansion of the urban green in the city . They are located in the interior courtyards of the blocks. In the urban nurseries takes place the reproduction of trees for the city of Volos in wooden containers on wheels that permits spatial flexibility. Near to the buildings the reproductive character is changed where urban farms are used for vegetable cultivation.

The concept of “fertility” follows all the design process in the project such as:

Pavings: permeable fertile soils that allow vegetation growth with geometry references to the parcel pattern of Volo’s rural landscape.
Plantations: where edible/medicine species are chosen
The new neighborhood uses that reactivate the existing abandoned buildings and where interaction and participation contribute to the fertile dialogue, symbiosis, and self-management. (Coordination Center “Fertile Cooperativa” – a space for the neighborhood manager office and multiple uses such as meetings, recreation, cafe, the Agricultural Center “Fertile Natura” – that accommodates the neighborhood agronomist office and the harvesting coordination center, the Cultural Center “Fertile Cultura” – a space for library, cinema and workshops.
The ecological design: (ecological water management, energy-saving lighting approach, holistic environmental management expanded on the building roofs, general promotion of ecological consciousness).
New parking spaces: In regard to the issue of the availability of car-parking spaces, the ideal solution would be the creation of two new parking spaces (either as bioclimatic multistory buildings or as underground ones) located in urban voids.

DESCRIPTION

The site has a special importance for the city’s collective memory because various historical events happened there. The intervention aims to create a contemporanean public space that maintains the site’s genius loci, has spatial cohesion and has a strong ecological aspect. The concepts of Memory, Time as unifying tissue of historical levels and Urbanity are considered as the main inspiration that give birth to a new square for urban events.

In the center of the square the void has a leading role as a virtue, as a symbol of loss and pause. It functions as the urban theater scene for the events and urban life. Shaded areas, gardens and the new urban forest are located in the site’s borders where the “sculptural” filter of platanus trees remains as the protagonist. A sculptural wall and trench are proposed as a minimal anti-monument for the historical events’ victims. Scattered light points are incorporated across the slopped wall and bottom of the water feature. They create an atmosphere of candles, as a modest reference to the collective historical memory, to forgiveness, to tolerance against diversity and multiculturalism. An arcade – canopy for ephemeral forms uses organizes the square along the way to the sea.

Main compositional spatial tools are:

• the paving surface that allows movement from the city to the sea. It functions as a unifying flowing surface that provides various local urban experiences. The paving is being stretched in parallel with the sea like a flexible tissue of zigzag stripes which flow all over the space like rhythmic waves. Their design attributes to the space’s geometrical character and they are twisted by the various spatial elements they encounter. The stripes are constructed by alternative lanes of cast concrete paving and cobblestones.

• the various spatial identities that provide spatial alternation and variety(the urban gate, the sea gate, the sea platform, the urban forest, the central void, the memory wall and trench, the Mediterranean gardens, the canopy-arcade, the urban podium)

• the plantation design with local species as a structural element of the square. It highlights the dominant perimetric “sculptural” filter of tall platanus trees, the main compositional project lines and creates a Mediterranean landscape with local dry species adapted to coastal urban environment.

Redesign of Ipsilpilis Square in Mirina

DESCRIPTION

Ipsipilis square constitutes a central important node located along the commercial street which crosses the city and ends up at the port. Despite its central character, public space lacks of cohesion, it is not used by citizens and it has a large percentage of hardscape pavings. Furthermore, it presents an image of neglection and it’s over-occupied by cars. The project aims to highlight the central character of public space and to establish a bioclimatic approach by introducing the concept of square-park – thus a more softscape natural landscape image into the city center.

The new paving creates a central “softscape” public space articulated in three units which flows all over space without obstacles. For this reason the square’s level is lowered 15 cm in order to have the same height level with the adjacent streets. Spatial qualities – pockets with uses like recreation, playground and gathering space, coexist with slight limits in a common softscape “carpet” of stabilized soils of various mixture, located beneath the shadows of large pines. Moreover, the asphalt of the nearby streets is replaced by cold material cobblestones and the traffic problem of the parking cars is arranged.

Tall pine trees remains as the protagonists on the plantation design while they are enriched by medium height trees, with characteristic the Judas tree that is used as a reference spatial element. Dry aromatic shrubs and groundcovers with low water requirements have structural character and are articulated either as vegetal barriers or as distinct but discreet low height separation elements of space.

DESCRIPTION

The primary goal of the proposal is the creation of a dynamic and multi-level public space with leisure and cultural functions embedded within a green zone, with the intention of merging the natural and urban landscapes and creating a pole of attraction for the entire duration of the day.

A basic compositional tool is the gesture of folding up the ground plane of the square, in the form of a new elliptical thriving horizon. The interior portion of the ellipse houses a series of cultural, commercial and leisure functions that give liveliness to the public space the entire twenty-four hour cycle. The form of the emergent ellipse preserves the memory of the old stadium as an important reference in the life of Nicosia, inspired by the inward-looking spectacle of the site’s previous function. In this way, it defines the space of the square: the main collective public space where people congregate and open, cultural or other events are carried out. At the same time, the emergent ellipse frees up the ground plane, while its new, elevated portion offers a reading of the surrounding area and the city of Nicosia in a way that is fluid and not static. Toward the side of the State Theater, the ellipse sinks into the basement level, uniting in one continuous movement the public spaces of the basement with those of the ground level and the first floor level, while simultaneously opening up a dialogue between the square and the theater building, where the ramps in the theater’s foyer transform into a dynamic spectacle for visitors to the square.

Along the perimeter, at the front with the city, a permeable zone of natural character is created: a park that functions as a filter for automobile disturbances while providing a landscape for strolling and leisure touring. It consists of a continuous and unified Mediterranean landscape, adjusted to the topography of the site, with mild elevations of the ground plane at various points and with tall trees of varying height and character, used as structural components of the overall composition. On the one hand, the city invades this natural landscape in the form of multiple, ray-like paths that unite the square at the site’s interior with the sidewalks along its edges, bringing pedestrians along the main thoroughfare deep into the heart of the square. On the other hand, the natural element itself “invades” the hard surfaces of the interior square, either in the form of trees or in the form of native planting. The latter form extends in narrow strips that interrupt the hard surfaces and carry over onto the roof of the raised ellipse, functioning as a kind of “womb”: with the passing of time and by way of pollination and natural settlement, this fertile element extends over into the fallow areas of prairie grass and other soft surfaces.

DESCRIPTION

The brief called for the selection of four Athenian blocks in any neighborhood of the greek capital with degraded urban environment and the creation of a large new urban plot to be produced by merging them. The intersection of streets inside the new ‘quadruple’ block in combination with urban voids and interior courtyards will serve as a new public space for use by all the inhabitants of the block.

The project aims to regenerate the cross-shaped street junction formed by Smirni’s and Fili’s streets in the center of Athens, Greece. The public space of the streets and the vacant lots is unified so as to create a single urban garden-park which promotes the concept of collective activity and self–management and where nature “invades” in the city. This intervention is called “e_co_llectiva” after ecology (eco), collectivity (collectiva) and new technologies (e).

In the project the hardscapes paving finishings are removed and it is introduced the concept of a path/tour that passes amongst cultivation gardens of different kinds of species . The path is formed by the basic form of the wooden platform which is anchored to the various entrances of the existing buildings as a reference to the ephemeral structures installed on the streets while they are under construction.

Each cultivation garden, called as urban “patch”, hosts various qualities of exploitable plants (dry aromatic/herb gardens, graminea gardens, vegetable plots, fruit trees gardens) and its property status is communal. In addition, parts of the softscapes host tall bushes as vegetal ‘barriers’ as well as climbing plants which are used for the creation of the green bioclimatic facades. The ‘negative form’ of the urban ‘patch’ forms the rest areas which are surfaces of stabilized soil where corten lighting poles and judas trees are located.

New uses for the neighborhood are proposed in centers that exploit of the existing abandoned buildings such as the “e_co_llectiva” center (center of the neighborhood – coordination center of the cultivation and harvesting process), the cultural center (cultural events, workshops regarding the creative recycling process of urban discarded material), and the library / film library.

Internet and ephemeral activities (organised in the existing urban void so as to take advantage of its ephemeral character) constitute two additional structural layers of the project, encouraging the participation of residents of other neighborhoods so as to integrate the project in a larger urban network of product exchange and participation (network of flower garden “adoption” located in ephemeral installations made of wooden pallets, participative services through internet platform).

In regards to the issue of the availability of car-parking spaces, the ideal solution would be to use the empty multi – storey building on Acharnon Street after an appropriate alteration as a multi-storey parking place for residents and visitors.

The proposal constitutes a bioclimatic approach where the natural landscape ‘’invades” into the city. It is a sustainable proposal as it relies on self-management; it takes the ecological water management into consideration and the option of using waste-composting methods as well as it promotes the general ecological consciousness. It is a project that can be implemented in successive stages, relatively of low cost because it does not require extensive expropriations and large amount of hardscape finishing products.

“e_co_llectiva” was awarded with the SALON GRAND PRIX, in the 4th Landscape Architecture Exhibition, Belgrade (2011).
