DESCRIPTION

The subject of the Competition was to express ideas for the pavement network of the city of Katerini social and commercial center.
The project “landscape_stitches” aims to create a contemporary public space that is spatially integrated, has a bioclimatic-ecological character, a social dimension and a variety of uses and actions, contributing to the formation of local identity for the city. The idea comes from the linearity of the pedestrian area and its use as an active urban passage of the city. By reinterpreting the dynamics of the axes the project proposes a fluid field of crossings, where urban and landscape bioclimatic features coexist as a new hybrid urban habitat.
The paving is treated as a single unitarian skin with elements of the Pierian landscape. It forms a unified urban carpet that is flowing throughout the whole pavement network. The new pattern is organized by landscape weaves that flow into space and are organized in orthogonal longitudinal shapes, the so-called “landscape stitches”. These are longitudinal small gardens that function as small urban parks with endemic species, green rooms that create rest areas with water elements and playgrounds. The Pierian Mountains and their landscape as a dominant landscape reference are the source of inspiration for these small landscapes.
Additional elements of the bioclimatic upgrading are the green facades with creepers applied to selected surrounding buildings, as well as the organization of a canopy system for the recreational areas.

DESCRIPTION

 The Schematic Design studies of the project “Eco_corridors” is the evolution process of the 1st prize won by topio7 architects-landscape architects firm at the competition of: “Regeneration and Reuse of former lignite mines in the Western Macedonia region” that was launched by the Public Power Corporation of Greece in 2015. These Schematic Design studies are required for the complete provision of services in order for the project to proceed to the next stage of the Final-Detailed design.

The Schematic Design studies focus on the evolution of strategies for the re-design of a 188ha area of a former abandoned lignite mine.  The subject of Schematic Design includes the following studies:

1. Architecture and Landscape Architecture Design
2. Hydraulic and Hydrological Study
3. Study of electronic infrastructure and structures,

and it is accompanied by a Forestry Consultant, Biologist – Landscape Biologist and Road Transport Engineer.

The “Eco_corridors” project idea rethinks this post-industrial landscape as a new uses area in order to become a public pole through its environmental, economic, and social transformation. It is a cultural landscape of memory thus the proposal aims also to maintain its unique genius loci. The concept derives from the longitudinal site’s shape which could function as an ecological corridor. The need for environmental enrichment and biodiversity has led to a system of fluxes that organizes spatial relationships and connects habitats. The resulting landscape is being crossed by a series of ecological itineraries – the ‘eco_corridors’ with different characters, qualities, and cultural uses, sports – and leisure facilities that offer economic benefits. The project’s main aim is to maintain the special atmosphere of the place, by unifying and integrating through scales. The project acts as a strategy that is being expressed in three thematic axes: (i) biodiversity-ecological connectivity (ii) water net management (iii) evolution through time (iv) spatial organization of movements and rest areas, v) new uses on local and supra local character (cultural uses, sports facilities, cultivations, and leisure). The project’s development is of a wider environmental, economic, aesthetic, and social importance, aiming for the Just transition of the region and 21st-century societies to the post-lignite era.

DESCRIPTION

The project “the elastic limit” from the architectural and landscape firm “topio7” was awarded with the 1st Prize at the competition for the “Regeneration and Reuse of the former Cemetery of Neapoli – Athens”

The competition’s site has a special importance for the city’s collective memory because of its past use as a cemetery. It is an enclosed and introverted space, characterized by isolation and melancholic memories, a place inaccessible to public use. In contrast to this current condition, the proposal envisions a mutual ‘osmosis’ between the park and the city, an ‘osmosis’ that will contribute to the revitalization and growth of the whole neighbourhood. Main objective of the project is the creation of an open, accessible public space, a contemporary urban park with ecological-bioclimatic character, with special emphasis on the social dimension and the site’s memory. Symbolically the idea regenerates space, proposing an “active ground”, a vivid natural park, a dynamic scenery that changes during the four seasons.

The park is organized by a series of successive circular zones that gradually lead the visitor from the city’s buzz to an enclosed landscape of recreation. At the border a perimetric promenade with entrance plazas is located and right afterwards a green buffer zone: the “elastic limit”. This filter of greenery leads to the main area of the park – a large clearing of rest areas and recreational zones, with a cafe-restaurant in the centre with corten steel fachades. It is an embedded in the topography landscape building, with a meadow for distant views at the roof.

The linear cemetery axes are kept as a memory reference and constitute the main connecting promenades of the project. There are composed of cobblestone pieces with green joints covered with a mix of lawn and wildflowers. At the central square the existing cypresses are maintained and water jets are located as a symbol of rebirth. Various thematic landscape zones and uses are proposed, such as the Church plaza, the spectacles’ area where an amphitheatre is embedded in the landscape, Mediterranean gardens with rest areas, fruit trees gardens, clearings for outdoor uses and a small wetland.

In the “elastic” green zone the interconnection and ‘osmosis’ with the urban fabric is continuous. Various activities and uses are located at the shaded areas under the trees. New planting zones complement the existing vegetation, creating a green protecting filter from the city noise, a filter that also offers aesthetic visual delight. New proposed uses are: sports area with courts, playgrounds and outdoor gyms, picnic areas, α mountain bike track, domestic animals’ farm and a ‘Green Point’. Light construction versatile kiosks are proposed, in order to host various activities and needs: an information point, an animals’ nest, a small shop for open air – bazars.

At the limits between the green buffer zone and the central part of the park a path for wandering, jogging and cycling is located. It has a serpentine form and is made of stabilized soil. It runs through the different landscape zones and offers a slower walking experience of the constantly changing space.

It is a proposal that through landscape design and ecological practices, attempts to reconquer an inactive space and transform it to a vivid contemporary park.

ΣΥΝΤΟΜΗ ΠΕΡΙΓΡΑΦΗ

H πρόταση «το ελαστικό όριο» από το αρχιτεκτονικό γραφείο topio7, απέσπασε το Α’ Βραβείο στον πρόσφατο Αρχιτεκτονικό Διαγωνισμό ιδεών για την αξιοποίηση του πρώην Νεκροταφείου Νεαπολέως στη Νίκαια.

Η περιοχή μελέτης του αποτελεί έναν κλειστό στο κοινό δημόσιο χώρο που διέπεται από συνθήκες απομόνωσης και μελαγχολικής μνήμης λόγω της παρελθούσας χρήσης του ως νεκροταφείο. Η πρόταση οραματίζεται ένα πάρκο σε αμφίδρομη σχέση ώσμωσης με την πόλη που θα αποτελέσει μοχλό αναζωογόνησης και ανάπτυξης. Βασικοί στόχοι της μελέτης είναι να «ανοίξει» ο χώρος προς την πόλη και να δημιουργηθεί ένα σύγχρονο αστικό πάρκο με οικολογικό-βιοκλιματικό χαρακτήρα, να τονιστεί η κοινωνική διάσταση του έργου ως υπαίθριου χώρου της πόλης, αλλά και να αναδειχθεί το έντονο στοιχείο της μνήμης του τόπου. Σε αντίστιξη με την παλιά χρήση του νεκροταφείου, η πρόταση επιδιώκει να αναπαράξει μια ενεργό φύση, ένα ενεργό έδαφος που θα αναγεννήσει το χώρο, με πρωταγωνιστή την περιοδικότητα της φύσης και την εναλλαγή των ειδών στις 4 εποχές.

Το πάρκο οργανώνεται σε μία διαδοχή ομόκεντρων κυκλικών ζωνών διείσδυσης από την πόλη σε ένα εσώτερο τοπίο αναψυχής. Από μια περιμετρική ζώνη πρασίνου – το λεγόμενο «ελαστικό όριο» – οδηγούμαστε στον κεντρικό χώρο του πάρκου που διαμορφώνεται ένα μεγάλο ξέφωτο στάσης και αναψυχής, με σημείο αναφοράς το υπόσκαφο αναψυκτήριο με όψεις από οξειδωμένο χάλυβα (cor-ten). Το φυτεμένο δώμα του λειτουργεί ως φυσική προέκταση του άνωθεν λιβαδιού, δημιουργώντας ένα μπαλκόνι ενατένισης των μακρινών οριζόντων, του πάρκου, της πόλης. Ως ανάμνηση των χαράξεων του πρώην νεκροταφείου διατηρείται το κεντρικό σταυροειδές μονοπάτι και επαναχρησιμοποιείται ως ο κεντρικός περίπατος. Αποτελείται από τεμάχια κυβολίθων με πράσινους κατά τόπους αρμούς με αγριάδα και αγριολούλουδα. Στην κεντρική πλατεία διατηρούνται τα υπάρχοντα κυπαρίσσια και τοποθετείται στοιχείο νερού ως σύμβολο αναγέννησης. Εκατέρωθεν της πλατείας διαμορφώνονται θεματικοί χώροι υπαίθριων δραστηριοτήτων, όπως χώροι θεαμάτων με αμφιθέατρο ενσωματωμένο στο τοπίο, χώροι στάσης μέσα σε μεσογειακούς κήπους με κιβωτιόσχημα παρτέρια και κήποι οπωροφόρων δένδρων, ξέφωτα καθώς και ο του κήπος νερού.

Στη περιμετρική ζώνη «ελαστικότητας» η διασύνδεση με τον αστικό ιστό είναι συνεχής και για αυτό τοποθετούνται ποικίλες δραστηριότητες κάτω από τα δένδρα. Ροές δενδροφυτεύσεων συμπληρώνουν την υπάρχουσα βλάστηση, δημιουργώντας ένα πράσινο φίλτρο ηχομόνωσης και οπτικής τέρψης. Χρήσεις που προτείνονται, είναι: αθλητικές δραστηριότητες, χώροι παιχνιδιών και υπαίθριας γυμναστικής, χώροι πικ νικ, πίστα mountain bike, πάρκο οικόσιτων ζώων, ‘Πράσινο Σημείο’. Ανακλητές κατασκευές στεγάστρου σε συνδυασμό με περίπτερα, οργανώνουν μία υπαίθρια αγορά-παζάρι και εκθέσεις. Τέλος, το κτίριο των χωνευτηρίων επαναλειτουργεί ως χώρος μνήμης και που μαζί με τις εξωτερικές διαμορφώσεις αποτελούν τον «κήπο της μνήμης». Σαν διακριτική υπογράμμιση των ορίων, στο μεταίχμιο μεταξύ του κεντρικού τμήματος του πάρκου και της «ελαστικής» ζώνης προτείνεται το οφιοειδές μονοπάτι περιπλάνησης. Διατρέχει τα διαφορετικά τοπία και προσφέρει μια πιο βιωματική και ελεύθερη κίνηση εμπειρίας του χώρου που μεταβάλλεται διαρκώς για τον πεζό και τον ποδηλάτη.

Πρόκειται για μα πρόταση που αξιοποιεί τις σύγχρονες τάσεις σχεδιασμού του τοπίου όπου κυριαρχεί ο άνθρωπος αλλά οι οικολογικές πρακτικές. Αποτελεί μια προσπάθεια επανάκτησης ενός ανενεργού υπαίθριου χώρου και επανασχεδιασμού του ως ενός ελεύθερου δημόσιου χώρου αναψυχής.

DESCRIPTION

The current typical inland landscape of Western Macedonia although changed through human made actions has preserved its beauty with dominant natural elements and interesting views. However it is characterized by fragmentation, access difficulty and discontinuities. This landscape needs a mild project gesture in order to be enhanced, environmentally and aesthetically improved and become a public attractive place.

Main aim of the project is to maintain the special atmosphere of the place using the unification and the integration through scales. The project acts as a strategy that is being expressed in three thematic axes: (i) biodiversity and ecological connectivity (ii) the water net (iii) the spatial organization of movements and stops and the new uses and constructions. The evolution of the project in time frames is also taken into consideration from the start.

The interpretation of the existing section and the relief, emphasizing in the individual special spatial qualities of place has played a significant role. The empty space – clearings between the individual landscape areas has been considered as a spatial and ecological virtue to be maintained. The movement and rest area network has been designed to be embedded in the relief and the individual spatial qualities providing variety between enclosed and extrovert areas and viewpoints.

The concept derives from the longitudinal shape of the site that functions as an ecological corridor.

The need for environmental enrichment and enhancement of biodiversity, has leaded to manage the landscape as a system of fluxes that organizes and connects in synergy the spatial relationships with the individual habitats. The resulting landscape is domained by a series of ecological itineraries (eco_corridors) with different characters and qualities. The “eco_corridors” project is being proposed forming different uses in the landscape, such as cultural uses, sport facilities, cultivations and leisure.

Plantation being a main structural element of the place is being used as an entrance marker, as a filter, as a mantle, in masses giving birth to enclosed or extrovert landscapes, to densities and clearings.

The proposal is structured in various landscape zones and intermediate transition zones with characterized spatial identities such as:

• the athletic park (sports activities, racing circuit in the forest, playgrounds, recreation, parkings)
• the spectacles’ place (amphitheater embedded in the landscape, existing motocross)
• The Conifer forest (net of movement and rest areas – picnic areas, belvederes)
• the cultivations (extensive timber, nurseries, fruit trees, ecological orchards)
• the riparian forest (net of movement, rest areas – picnic areas, social games, recreation)
• The central meadow (lineal guarrigue gardens, places for social happenings, clearings of natural regeneration, outdoor activities, marketplaces , exhibition of sculptures and industrial installations as “objects trouvés¨)
• the Robinia pseudoacacia forest (net of movement and rest areas – picnic areas, adventures park, belvederes)
• the artificial wetlands aiming to irrigate the whole area (rainwater deposits, macrofita)
• the hills (main viewports – belvederes for the whole area and the observation of the fauna)

ΣΥΝΤΟΜΗ ΠΕΡΙΓΡΑΦΗ

Το τοπίο ενδοχώρας της Δυτικής Μακεδονίας αν και έχει υποστεί την ανθρωπογενή επέμβαση, διατηρεί μια ομορφιά με έντονο το φυσικό στοιχείο και εντυπωσιακές θέες διαφορετικών κατευθύνσεων. Όμως διέπεται από ασυνέχεια, δυσκολία στην προσβασιμότητα, και κατά τόπους αποσπασματικότητα. Η περιοχή χρήζει μίας νέας χειρονομίας ήπιας επέμβασης, προκειμένου να αναδειχθεί και να αποτελέσει πόλο έλξης και αξιοποίησης.

Στόχος της πρότασης είναι να διατηρηθεί η ατμόσφαιρα του συγκεκριμένου τοπίου μέσω της ενοποίησης των συνδέσεων σε όλες τις κλίμακες. Η επέμβαση δρα ως στρατηγική που αναπτύσσεται σε τρεις θεματικούς άξονες οργάνωσης: (α) της βιοποικιλότητας και οικολογικής συνδεσιμότητας (β) του δικτύου νερού (γ) της χωρικής οργάνωσης του δικτύου κίνησης – στάσης και των νέων χρήσεων και κατασκευών. Η πρόταση σχεδιάζεται εξαρχής υπολογίζοντας τη χρονική ανάπτυξή σε φάσεις.

Η τοπιακή ανάδειξη της περιοχής στηρίζεται στην ερμηνεία της τομής και του αναγλύφου, δίνοντας έμφαση στα υπάρχοντα μορφολογικά χαρακτηριστικά. Ο κενός χώρος, το κενό διάστημα ανάμεσα στις επιμέρους τοποθεσίες θεωρείται χωρική και οικολογική αρετή και προτείνεται να διατηρηθεί. Οι διαφορετικές θεάσεις και εναλλαγές στην εμβέλεια της ορατότητας καταστρώνουν ένα παιχνίδι οπτικών ανταποκρίσεων, βάσει του οποίου διαπλάθεται το δίκτυο κίνησης και πλατωμάτων θέασης.

Η κεντρική ιδέα προέρχεται από τη διαμήκη μορφή και γραμμικότητα της τοποθεσίας που δύναται να λειτουργήσει ως οικολογικός διάδρομος. Η ανάγκη περιβαλλοντικού εμπλουτισμού και ενίσχυσης της βιοποικιλότητας, οδήγησε στη διαχείριση του τοπίου ως ένα σύστημα ροών που σε συνέργεια οργανώνει και διασυνδέει τις χωρικές σχέσεις με τα επιμέρους ενδιαιτήματα (habitats). Το παραγόμενο τοπίο διέπεται από σειρά οικολογικών διαδρομών – τις eco_διαδρομές – διαφορετικών χαρακτήρων και ποιοτήτων. Οι διαδρομές αυτές εμπεριέχουν χρήσεις πολιτισμού, αναψυχής, αθλητικών και καλλιεργειών.

Η φύτευση ως δομή τοποθετείται ως επισήμανση στις πύλες, ως φίλτρο, ως μανδύας που περικλείει τοπία, σε μάζες δίδοντας εσωστρεφείς και εξωστρεφείς περιοχές, πυκνότητες και ξέφωτα.

Η πρόταση αρθρώνεται σε επιμέρους τοπία – θέματα και σε ενδιάμεσες ζώνες μετάβασης:
• αθλητικό πάρκο (γήπεδα, στίβος στο δάσος, αναψυχή, παιδικά παιχνίδια)
• περιοχή θεαμάτων (αμφιθέατρο ενσωματωμένο στο λιβάδι/πρανές, πίστα motocross)
• δάσος Κωνοφόρων (δίκτυο περιπλάνησης – στάσης, περιοχές picnic, belvederes)
• καλλιέργειες (καλλιέργειες ξυλείας, φυτώρια δένδρων, οπορωφόρα δένδρα, οικολογικά περιβόλια)
• παραρεμάτιο δάσος (δίκτυο περιπλάνησης – στάσης, περιοχές picnic, κοινωνικά παιχνίδια, αναψυχή)
• κεντρικό λιβάδι (γραμμικοί μεσογειακοί αρωματικοί κήποι φρυγάνων, ελεύθερο πεδίο ως τόπος ενατένισης του κενού και περιοχή φυσικής αναγέννησης, υπαίθριες δραστηριότητες, παζάρια έκθεση γλυπτών – εξαρτημάτων ως “objects trouvés¨ στο τοπίο)
• δάσος Ακακίας (δίκτυο περιπλάνησης – στάσης, περιοχές picnic, adventures park, belvederes)
• τεχνητοί υδροβιότοποι για τις ανάγκες άρδευσης της περιοχής (περιοχές συλλογής ομβρίων, καθαρισμός με μακρόφυτα)
• λόφοι (κύρια σημεία θέασης ολόκληρης της περιοχής και σημεία παρατήρησης της πανίδας)
